An eSIM is a SIM card that is embedded in a mobile device and can connect you to any operator offering eSIM services.
Furthermore, the eSIM works the same way as a traditional SIM card, but you don’t need a physical SIM card to use it. It is actually pre-installed in the device and you can activate it by installing the “eSIM profile” of a new operator.

How does e-SIM work?
With an eSIM-compatible device, you can easily install an eSIM profile (provided by operators/carriers) to be able to buy an eSIM data plan when you need it, on the go. Plus you can use multiple operators and subscribe simultaneously several data plans to suit your needs: when travelling, working from home or remotely…
More to know: eSIM plays a major role in the Internet of Things (IoT) as the technology is already embedded in cars, wearables, home appliances, industrial machines…
Nepal Telecom e-SIM
Nepal Telecom (NTC) will begin distributing eSIM cards from Bhadra. The operator is reportedly conducting internal tests and is close to introducing the programmable virtual SIM cards to the customers next month.
Ranjit Lohiya, the Co-spokesman of Ntc recently shared, “We are currently testing the service. We are at the final stage. After internal testing for Shrawan, we will launch eSIM commercially in Bhadra”.
With embedded SIM cards available, people won’t have to look around for physical ones. If a user’s mobile phone supports, the system itself configures a SIM profile.
In April, NTC signed an agreement with Monty UK Global Limited to bring embedded SIM cards to the telcom’s customers. The plan is to bring a revolutionary eSIM service to Nepal’s GSM users in the first half of 2079 BS. This could happen as early as Shrawan if the testing is completed.
Ntc has signed an MoU with Monty UK Global’s regional representative Ultimate Horizon Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Ntc Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Sangita Pahadi and Ultimate Horizon’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Aditya Anand signed the agreement papers on Baisakh 11th 2079.
As per the agreement, the UK-based tech company Monty UK Global will provide a necessary eSIM platform for NTC.
Mrs. Pahadi said that introducing eSIM “is part of the company’s commitment to bringing modern technologies”.
Similarly, Aditya Anand, CEO of Ultimate Horizon Technologies extended his views on the project of eSIM in Nepal. He shared that the company would fulfill all the technical work in time and hand over the platform to Ntc. A regular SIM card comes with a dedicated slot in mobile phones. On the other hand, its enhanced digital sibling goes right to the chip inside the phone. You need an eSIM profile to activate the digital SIM service. It gives phone makers more space that they can utilize for a larger battery or make lighter devices.
